Trump Demands Tech Giants Cover Data-Center Energy Costs to Shield Consumers
Former President Donald Trump has called on major technology companies to absorb the rising energy costs associated with data centers, warning that Americans should not bear the burden of higher electricity bills. In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed ongoing discussions with Microsoft Corporation, asserting that the software giant will implement "major changes" this week to address the issue.
Electricity prices have surged 40% over the past five years, outpacing general inflation, according to the St. Louis Fed. TRUMP emphasized that while data centers are critical to the U.S. AI boom, tech firms must "pay their own way" rather than passing costs to consumers. Microsoft has yet to comment, but its Vice Chair, Brad Smith, is scheduled to speak at a Washington event this week.
